FAQs
What to expect from therapy?
Therapy is a safe space to explore the challenges you’re facing and find a way towards a sense of greater integration and fulfilment. Sessions are collaborative, meaning that we will be working together to meet your therapy goals. No two clients are the same, and I take a dynamic approach to my work using evidence based practices which have been proven to be effective in improving wellbeing.
What happens in the first session?
I understand that starting therapy can feel quite daunting - reaching out for support is a brave step! We will use the first session to get a greater understanding of what has brought you in to see me. This is an opportunity to start sharing your story and for me to learn a little about your history, the concerns you are dealing with at the moment and establish how we can work together moving forwards. All you need to do is turn up and we can take it from there! Before our first session comes to an end, we will discuss how you are feeling and if we both believe we are a good fit to continue working together.
How long are sessions?
Sessions last between 50 and 60 minutes.
How many sessions do I need?
I am committed to ensuring that therapy is effective and specifically tailored to your needs. This means there are no “hard and fast” rules regarding the length of treatment as this is largely determined by the nature of your concerns. Therapy does not offer quick fixes, with some clients requiring fewer sessions and others more if they are experiencing more complex or long-standing difficulties. We will discuss this following the initial assessment session and together can decide on a plan that you are comfortable with.
Session Fees
The full fee is $220 per session or $123.35 per session with a referral from your GP. You do not need a referral to see a psychologist, however this does reduce the fee.
Cancellation Policy
If you are unable to attend your appointment, please advise the practice at least 24 hours in advance of your scheduled session. Except for exceptional unforeseen circumstances, 50% of your session will be charged for appointments that are cancelled on the day or with less than 24 hours notice before your appointment time.
Medicare Rebates
Medicare rebates are available for a range of specified psychological services. To be eligible to receive psychological services under Medicare, you must be referred by your GP or in some instances by a psychiatrist or paediatrician. With a Mental Healthcare Plan referral you can claim up to ten sessions per calendar year through Medicare and must provide this plan in the first session.
Private Healthcare Fund
Many private health funds offer a rebate for psychological services with a General or Clinical Psychologist. You can check with your fund to ensure that they cover mental health consultations with a General Psychologist. Health fund rebates do not require a GP referral and you cannot claim from Medicare and your health fund for the same consultation.
Privacy and Confidentiality
As a psychologist and member of the Australian Psychological Society (APS), I work under the APS’s code of ethics. Information that is disclosed in session will remain confidential unless you give written consent that I can disclose or exchange information with other parties. The exceptions to this are if there are concerns to your safety or others or in the case of subpoenas.
